This little puppy runs away with his four brothers and sisters under a fence. He finds adventure in the wide world. The Poky Little Puppy was written by Janette Subring Lowrey and illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren. It was first published in 1942. Five little puppies dug a hole under the fence and went for a walk in the wide, wide world. The puppies meet a caterpillar, a lizard, a frog, and they have the adventure of digging a hole. The lesson of the story has to do with responsibility as the last page states: no desserts ever unless puppies never dig holes under this fence again.

The Smithsonian Institute in Washington has recognized The Poky Little Puppys historical value and is part of the permanent collection. This is one of the 12 original Golden Books that became a classic since 1942. Golden Books has been around for more than 60 years. There are extensive books in this series and every one is a delightful reading opportunity.
