While I was growing up one of my favorite books was “Misty of Chincoteague”. I was particularly enamored of horse stories and have many memories of reading the book and enjoying learning about the wild horses of Chincoteague Island in Virginia. This story is based on a real pony. The author Marguerite Henry developed a history of facts with her imagination. She went to Chincoteague and witnessed the July pony penning and adoption of the wild Assateague Island ponies. Each year the people round up the ponies and swim them a quarter of a mile across the channel so that the healthy foals can be auctioned. It was started by the volunteer fire department as a means of raising funds.

Ms. Henry befriended the Beebe family, owner of Misty, a Palomino and white pinto pony that begins her series of books. The second book tells how Misty and her foal Stormy saved the island of ponies after a hurricane.

Breyer has a long history with horse products. These horses were sculpted by master sculptor Christian Hess. Breyer made the two models ever since. They remain best selling models. The company has donated more than $50,000 to the Misty of Chincoteague Foundation to support the ponies of Assateague. They have sold the models separately and with the book. Children develop their creativity, social skills, and love of nature, interest in other countries and cultures and education. The company website has a great deal of information about the history of horses and the countries that they come from.

The horses that Breyer makes appeal to every child who enjoys horses. Their newest one is Giddy Up! Inspired by a new movie Hidalgo. They are built with great craftsmanship and authenticity. They are a Division of Reeves International. There are over 200 unique horses, animals and accessories available. The Breyer Company started in Chicago, Illinois, making custom molded plastic products including the defense industry. In 1950 when that contract ended they accepted an order to create a plastic horse. They decided to continue to produce and market the Western horse and others followed. In 1984 Reeves International relocated the factory from Illinois to New Jersey.
