 WHAM-O / Pro Classic Frisbee

Pro Classic FrisbeePro Classic Frisbee is great exercise for all ages. This is a product that is not only inexpensive but it is delightful to get everyone involved in throwing whether at a picnic, backyard, at the beach, anywhere you want to go. Everyone can have fun together. With the need for more exercise the products that Wham-O produces provides fun and exercise at the same time, a great combination.

When the product first came out it was in 1957 and it was based on a Frisbi baking company at Bridgeport Connecticut. In the 1920’s students at Yale University threw the baking tins around for fun and yelled “Frisbee” to warn others that they were in the middle of throwing. Fred Morrison, a carpenter and building inspector was fascinated with flight and plastic and he came up with a design for a flying disc. Wham-O bought the idea and named it “Pluto Platter” because it resembled a flying saucer. Wham-O modified the plastic disc in 1957 and trademarked the name Frisbee. It became a popular activity then and continues to be popular even with organized championships. They have made a variety of different shapes and sizes and glow in the dark and other features. Wham-O has produced more than 100 million Frisbee discs.

Here are some fun facts about Frisbees. In 1998 a man from Colorado threw a disc more than 290 feet to set a world distance record. In 1957 the First International Frisbee terminate was held at Escanaba, Michigan. In 1963 the U.S. Navy tested Frisbees as a way to keep flares afloat. In 1967 the International Frisbee Association was founded. You can find out more about Frisbees by visiting the Wham-O website.

There are many different variations of Frisbee. You can get a Special Edition Frisbee Master Tournament that is with gold foil that’s hot stamped and individually numbered or a cool moonlighter that glows in the dark that is designed with the moon surface or a Frisbee that is called Heat Wave that changes color in the sunlight. No matter which product you choose, there is a great Frisbee for all ages.

The classic now comes in orange, lime, green, or purple, is high quality and it’s great for kids and adults as well. I should mention also that Frisbee also comes as an all sport that is sturdy and comes in different colors and those that are decorated with different themes such as Max Flight which is an easy to throw Frisbee disc and a heavyweight Frisbee that’s not for competition but is great in high winds. And finally there is the ultimate Frisbee that is the larger diameter and weight that allows for precise passing in all plane conditions. Frisbee’s a fun, easy to buy and will remain classics for a long time to come.

Wham-O has created many innovative products. In the 50’s Wham-O created slingshots when it was founded in 1948, it made the sound “wham-o”. The founders, Arthur “Spud” Melin and Richard Knerr were known as the gurus of fads. When Fred Morrison brought the disc to them in 1955 it was introduced to the consumer market in 1957 as Pluto Platter because the country was interested in unidentified flying objects. It was modified in 1958 and renamed Frisbee.

In the early 1960’s Norman Stingley, a chemical engineer, accidentally created a plastic project that bounced uncontrollably. He offered the product to Melin and Knerr and the Super Ball was created. During the 1960’s Wham-o sold some 20 million Super Balls before it was copied by competitors. But Wham-o has brought back the original Super Ball. In 1958 they went to Australia because they heard of a bamboo ring for exercise which became the Hula Hoop. They promoted it in Southern California playgrounds and gave demonstrations, gave kids the hoops to play and learn. It became one of the greatest fads ever as 25 million were sold in four months. There were many other brilliant ideas that came to this company and they tried different ideas. Some of them worked very well and some of them did not.

In 1983 the Hacky Sack footbag was added to Wham-o and became a fad. In 1982 it was purchased by Kransco Group Companies. In 1994 Mattel bought Wham-O from Kransco. In 1997 Wham-O became independent again and is located in Emeryville, California.
