Paul Lapidus, IDSA

is a professional invention, design and development company, creating and licensing our their innovative product concepts in the toy, gift and baby products industries since 1978. As a result of their success and close working relationship with their manufacturing clients, their name is now sent out to independent inventors as inventor agents, brokers and representatives. In this capacity they've been asked to evaluate (screen & play test) new product ideas from independent inventors, and represent those inventors whose product concepts meet our manufacturing clients' licensing requisites and new product needs.

Licensing new product ideas begin with commitment:
At NewFuntiers we're often asked about the creative process, and how to succeed in the speculative business of creating and licensing new product ideas to manufacturers. Although there are many factors leading to success, one stands out as an undeniably important starting point: You must first make a commitment to your goal, and the effort it takes to reach it.

Commitment:

"Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no person could have dreamt would have come their way." (Unknown Author)

We have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:

"Whatever you can do or dream, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

And finally, a quote from one of our era's greatest philosophers:

"If you don't know where you're going...you might not get there." - Yogi Berra

Some other things to keep in mind: Now that you have a greater appreciation for the power of commitment, and how it may help you achieve your creative goals, let me share with you a simple fact that will help you to maintain a realistic and balanced perspective:

Try not to let your excitement and enthusiasm about your new concept overcome your good judgment. Only work with professionals (agents, representatives or brokers)that have been recommended to you by one or more major manufacturers, or by other trusted professionals and/or trade organizations in the industry your creating in. Even then there are no guarantees. As you might expect, companies, open to licensing new products, ONLYwant to see strong and viable new product concepts in the presentations we and other professionals make to them. Our responsibility, therefore, is to select those high quality product ideas, using our background and 25 years experience working with our manufacturing clients. In the final analysis, it's up to them to decide which new products to license and put into their product lines. It's a tough business. But if we're successful, licensing your new product idea, the financial rewards can be great.

At NewFuntiers, developing a working relationship based on trust is as important to us, as it is to you. We will never shine you on by telling you that, "You've created the greatest product we've ever seen!", while, at the same time, knowing there are real licensing issues that will cause it to be rejected by our manufacturing clients. (Remember, we have to sit face to face with them in presentation meetings, and they don't appreciate having their time wasted.) On the other hand, when we tell you that you have a strong product concept, and we'd like to represent it on your behalf, be assured that you do, and that we're ready to put our money where our mouth is by bearing the entire cost of representing and licensing it to one our manufacturing clients.
